Summary
We are seeking an experienced Instructional Designer / Science SME for a High School Physics course build. This role is responsible for building a full course from scratch, aligning content to NGSS and state standards, and using AI tools to accelerate content development while maintaining rigorous accuracy and quality standards. This is a great fit for an instructional designer with deep subject-matter expertise in Physics and a proven track record of building original course content. AI tools will be used to accelerate all aspects of content development, but all content must be reviewed and fact-checked for accuracy. Seeking an individual who is willing to learn new AI skills and implement them in their work.
The Instructional Designer / Subject Matter Expert for High School Physics will be building and refining a course map aligned to NGSS and state standards, and developing lessons, activities, assessments, and supporting materials from scratch. The contractor will report to the content lead, who will approve all course and unit structure, standard alignments, and lesson planning. The final deliverable is a complete, standards-aligned High School Physics course.
Key Responsibilities
Curriculum & Course Development
• Apply instructional design best practices across all phases of the project, analysis, design, development, rollout, and review
• Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all High School Physics content
• Build and refine a Physics course map aligned to NGSS and state standards
• Create lessons, activities, assessments, and supporting materials (e.g., teacher guides) from scratch
• Contribute to the design of online curriculum, instructional materials, and assessments, applying current best practices in the field
AI-Assisted Content Development
• Use provided AI tools to support content development, including drafting lessons and generating assessment items
• Evaluate, edit, and fact-check all AI-generated content for accuracy and standards alignment (critical for Physics — no hallucinated formulas or concepts)
• Author and edit content directly within the team's authoring system and approved third-party platforms
Assessment Design
• Write assessments and knowledge checks aligned to specific learning objectives
• Design knowledge checks and other assessments to measure student comprehension
• Build assessments in the LMS and create supplementary content — discussion questions, activity pages, unit projects, and similar materials
Media & Production Support
• Collaborate and coordinate with visual designers on developing graphics and other design needs
• Build and edit interactive activities in proprietary tools and approved third-party platforms
• Review for effectiveness throughout development, collaborating with the UX team as needed
Process & Collaboration
• Coordinate with PMO team by following the agreed-upon project plan and meet shared milestones and deadlines
• Report to content lead on development process and progress.
• Bring creative, effective instructional design strategies to improve content delivery and learner engagement
Required
• Bachelor's degree in physics, Physics Education, Engineering, or a closely related field (Master's preferred)
• 4-8 years of instructional design experience developing digital curriculum
• Demonstrated subject matter expertise in high school Physics
• Experience building curriculum from scratch — not just adapting or reviewing existing content
• Working knowledge of NGSS and experience aligning content to state science standards
• Practical, hands-on experience using AI tools for content development (e.g., drafting lessons, generating assessment items, building instructional materials) — able to speak to how you use AI professionally, not just casually
• Experience writing assessments/knowledge checks aligned to specific learning objectives
• Comfort working in online authoring platforms and/or LMS environments (e.g., SoftChalk, Canvas, or similar)
• Strong writing skills — clear, accurate, age-appropriate content for high school students
• Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage a fast-paced, milestone-driven project
Preferred
• Prior experience developing full-course digital curriculum for all school models (virtual and brick and mortar)
• Experience collaborating with UX or media/production teams on interactive content
• Background developing teacher-facing materials (guides, pacing docs) alongside student-facing lessons
